My first laptop
Young carer Skye is aged 16 and cares for her mother who is aged 56. She had a stroke and requires assistance with most things and she also suffers from depression.
Skye has to assist her mother with getting up, dressing, meal preparation, housework and shopping. She ensures that her mother has what she needs for the day and if she is not going to be home, she needs to make sure that her mother has someone to contact if she needs help. Skye spends a lot of time at home and it has resulted in her not being able to attend school full time. She has enrolled to attend FLO - Flexible Learning Options program working towards her SACE. The last two years have been challenging for her. Even more so challenging, as she did not have a computer or laptop at home to help with her studies or receive any additional support.
Thanks for Caring purchased an Acer Aspire laptop which will enable her to access support from her teachers. Another benefit is that she will be able to interact with other young carers and her friends on social sites. Skye wrote: "I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone at Thanks for Caring and Believe Foundation for the laptop. I absolutely love it and can't wait to do my school work and socialising. Thank you again for my first ever laptop.....Thank you, I'm so excited!" It's fabulous to see such enthusiasm!
